Mark 1:14-20
14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him. 1 Corinthians 9:19-23
19 For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. 20 To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. 21 To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. 23 I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. (ESV)

John 20:21
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” (ESV)
Luke 4:16-21
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (ESV)
Acts 1:8
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (ESV)

Matthew 7:24-29
24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
28 And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, 29 for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. (ESV)

Everyone is a Missionary
We all like to fit in, and be part of something bigger. We all like to feel as if our life has meaning and purpose. The problem for Christians is that many of us can feel like, when it comes to serving God we are filling in the gaps outside of work, and watching on while other people, like paid church workers get to do the real stuff. Take the word “missionary” for example. In many churches the word “missionary” refers to a few specific Christians often working in ither countries. Jesus has a mission for us all wherever we are.
It’s time to take back the word “missionary” and claim it for every single Christian. It’s time to learn about Jesus’ mission so that we discover what God’s plan for our lives is, and it begins here. In you office, at the school gates, in the pub and on the streets. Everywhere is a mission field and you are a missionary. Are you in?
The Sermon on the Mount

It sometimes seems like everybody loves the Sermon on the Mount. President Obama quote it in his books. The late Michael Jackson said “I love the sermon on the mount”. It’s that one bit of the Bible many people say they admire, regardless of whether they are Christians or not. This is actually very surprising considering Jesus says some really challenging things like “unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven” and “If your right eye causes you to sin , gouge it out… it is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell”. Pehaps people gloss over these bits and just remember the nice bits “love your neighbour”. But I also wonder if there is something attractive to many people about being challenged to a radically different lifestyle. Are people tired of hearing what they want to hear? Jesus covers so many important and timely topics from integrity to lust and marriage to prayer. These are topics where we need refreshing thinking. That is what this series is about.
